Harris hails CARDI’s work and encourages farmers

ZIZ News…Dec 14, 2012 — Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, Senior Minister and Minister of Agriculture congratulated the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, for excellent technical support to the agriculture sector in general, and farmers in particular.

Dr Harris was at the time addressing a large turnout of farmers and stakeholders of the agricultural community at the sweet potato open day at CARDI’s Experimental Field Station at Estridge Estate, Mansion.

Dr Harris encouraged the farmers to visit the CARDI field station and seek answers to any questions they may have as it relates to their crops. CARDI showcased twelve varieties of sweet potatoes yesterday, gave update on their yield and other characteristics. Agro processors from St Kitts and Nevis gave samples of sweet potatoes being used for chips, flour, porridge making, and a range of other products.

The opening ceremony was addressed by the Senior Minister, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, Ms Pathleen Titus, CARDI’s Country Representative, Mr Thomas Jackson, Director of Agriculture, St Kitts and Mr Keithley Amory, Director of Agriculture, Nevis.

A tour of CARDI’s field station allowed insights into greenhouses, water management systems, varieties of sweet potatoes, peppers, bananas, sorrel, etc.
