Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 11, 2020 (ZIZ News):  Chairman of the Cannabis Industry Implementation Committee, Dr. Wycliffe Baird says the twin island federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is heading in the right direction following its move to decriminalize marijuana.

Dr. Baird was at the time presenting as a guest on ZIZ’s radio programme, “Straight Talk” with the Hon. Ian Liburd on Thursday.

He said although he has never smoked cannabis, he is a strong advocate for the use of marijuana noting that its advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Dr. Baird said he has come to this conclusion because Schedule 1 drugs like morphine, cocaine and heroin have a high potential for abuse and are capable of seriously injuring or killing persons unlike marijuana.

The Drugs (Prevention and Abatement of the Misuse and Abuse of Drugs) (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was successfully passed in the National Assembly on Wednesday July 31, 2019.

The legislative amendments are geared towards the establishment of a marijuana industry and regulate the use of marijuana/cannabis for medicinal and scientific, religious and recreational purposes in the Federation.
