Ministry of Education salutes deceased colleague teacher

Basseterre: St. Kitts, May 21, 2020:​The Ministry of Education in St. Kitts and Nevis is saluting deceased colleague Teacher Fiona Heyliger, who has left an indelible mark on the system of Education in St. Kitts and Nevis over the past 40 years. 

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Mr William Vincent Hodge stated, “Mrs. Heyliger made valuable contributions during her tenure. She served as the first staff meeting secretary when I assumed the principalship at the Sandy Point High School in 1991. She always gave quiet but powerfully competent service and was a tower of strength in her family, church community and work environment.

Among posts held by the late Teacher Heyliger were Third on Staff at the Charles E Mills Secondary School, Head of the Business Department, member of the Senior Management Team, member of the School’s Timetable and Curriculum Management Committee, CXC Registrar (CEMSS), Events and Hospitality Team Committee member, Staff meeting secretary, teacher and mentor to new teachers.

Other colleagues with whom Mrs. Heyliger came into contact including former Chief Education Officer Mr. Darryll Lloyd, were equally complimentary with respect to teacher Heyliger’s outstanding personality. The teacher was commended for being courteous, respectful, composed and calm in her interactions.

She was recently honoured by the Ministry of Education at its World Teachers’ Day Cocktail for her 40 years of service.

The Ministry has expressed sincere condolences to the family and friends of Teacher Heyliger who passed away peacefully at the Pogson Hospital over the past weekend and is survived by her husband and children. “May her soul rest in eternal peace and may the Spirit of God provide comfort to all who now mourn Mrs, Fiona Heyliger’s passing,” the tribute stated.
