Acting PM Inspects Field Hospital After Disaster Training

BASSETERRE — Acting Prime Minister Dr. Geoffrey Hanley and Acting Minister of National Security Garth Wilkin inspected a field hospital at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) headquarters on Friday, October 9, as the Federation continues to strengthen its disaster response capabilities.

The visit followed three days of practical training, held October 7 to 9, on assembling and operating the facility. The exercise brought together the IBHS Disaster Management Team, the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, NEMA and the Public Works Department.

Participants received hands-on instruction in setting up the field hospital, including assembling flooring panels, erecting the shelter structure and installing lighting systems.

The training builds on the initial assembly of two 40-bed field hospitals donated by the United States government in October 2021. One is designated for St. Kitts and the other for Nevis.

Each facility contains 40 beds across four wards. It is equipped with bathroom facilities, lighting, air conditioning, a generator and essential bedding supplies.

The field hospitals are intended to provide additional medical capacity when natural disasters, emergencies or other major incidents place increased demands on the Federation’s healthcare services.
