Airbag Recall

Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 21, 2019 (ZIZ News): TDC Automotive has issued a warning to drivers of specific models sold here about a defect in airbags

On Wednesday ZIZ News spoke with Duran Merchant, Assistant Foreman of TDC Automotive who told us that about three hundred Toyota vehicles with specific models from 2006-2016 are now being recalled to have their airbags replaced.

A company called Takata made some airbags and they’re not as safe as they could be,” he said. “So Toyota is taking responsibility and having those airbags replaced on the affected models.”

Merchant continued “We actually sold quite a few of those models. Those being the Toyota Yaris, Corolla, Rav 4 and 4Runner. The Corolla, Yaris, and Rav4 range from the year 2006 to about 2012 and the 4Runner from 2012 to 14.”

He said the recall is specifically for the passenger side airbag in the Yaris and the driver side airbag in the Rav 4. He’s urging anyone who may have bought these models to bring them in to have the airbags replaced free of cost.

We have quite a few of them on the island,” he said. “And we want to make sure that everybody is driving as top notch, as safe as possible a vehicle so we wanna make sure that our customers are safe on the road so this is how it affects them. If they get into a collision the devices that are used to protect the persons might not be as effective as they could be.”

Merchant said previously TDC has been using social media to reach out to drivers to have their airbags changed but they are not seeing the response they’d like.

He’s urging drivers to come in and change their airbags as quickly as possible to ensure that they are safe on the road.
