BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, September 9, 2019 (PLP PR Media Inc.) — Another successful edition of Prime Minister’s Health Walk, held on Saturday September 7, has reiterated that citizens and residents of the Federation are taking seriously the health message Prime Minister Dr the Hon Timothy Harris has been spreading by word and action.
Prime Minister Harris, who is also the National Political Leader of the Peoples Labour Party (PLP), was at the Bellevue bus stop a few minutes past 5:00 am, before the walk started and many walk enthusiasts were surprised when he called the gathering to order and requested Mrs Sonia Henry to lead with a word of prayer before the walkers to set off for Ottley’s hard courts where the walk would end.
It was still dark and rather chilly when the participants left Bellevue. They walked through the villages of Tabernacle, Mansion, Christchurch, Bourryeau/Molineux, Lodge, and by the time they arrived at the hard courts in Ottley’s, a few minutes to seven, the sun shone bright. A healthy breakfast was served to all the participants.
“I am encouraged by the large turnout today, which included many of our regular walk participants and quite a number of new participants,” said Prime Minister Harris at the end of the walk. “I congratulate 57-year old Ms Lillian Richardson of Saddlers Village who participated for the first time and was the fourth person, and the first female, to finish the walk.”
The latest edition of Prime Minister’s Health Walk has come just one month after the launch of SKN Moves on Friday August 9 that was followed by a National Health Walk the following day on Saturday August 10.
SKN Moves is an initiative to promote healthy lifestyles and at its launch Prime Minister Harris, who also serves as CARICOM’s lead spokesperson on human resource, health and HIV matters, encouraged persons to follow three key steps to lead healthy lifestyles – physical activity, healthy eating and regular doctor check-ups – as that would be a sure way of preventing NCDs from occurring in families and communities.
According to Prime Minister Harris, leading healthy lifestyles through physical activity is a message that has been well received by a majority of the people in the country and Prime Minister’s Health Walk will continue to encourage more persons to get involved in a form of physical activity such as regular walks.
The Honourable Prime Minister who is the Area Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Number Seven organised the monthly Constituency Number Seven Health Walk for a number of years, and due to the walk’s popularity persons from all over St. Kitts used to take part. In 2017 it was renamed the Prime Minister’s Health Walk and became a national calendar event, and as a result the venues have spread to the other areas of St. Kitts.
Joining the Prime Minister on the latest edition of the Prime Minister’s Health Walk included the PLP’s Deputy National Political Leader Senator the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett, PLP National Chairman Mr Warren Thompson, along with other members of the PLP National Executive. Also present were Branch Executive Members from the various PLP Constituency branches.
