Baler Fully Commissioned

ZIZ News September 24, 2013 — A new Baler and assorted pieces of equipment were officially handed over to the Solid Waste Management Corporation today.

And as ZIZ channel five’s Kilony Johnson reports, this fits perfectly into the government’s plan of turning St Kitts and Nevis into a green economy by 2015.

Major waste generators and Government officials joined staff of the Solid Waste Management Corporation to witness the official handing over of the new Baler to the Conaree landfill.

The Okel Baler and Loaders were purchased for One Million US dollars and officials were able to secure materials to run the baler for one year.

General Manager of the Solid Waste Management Corporation, Alphonso Bridgewater says this Baler is compatible with the process of converting waste to energy.

NAANOVO was responsible for procuring the new Baler and is urging the Government to take another step closer to the establishment of a waste to energy plant on the island.

President of the waste to energy division at NAANOVO, Anthony Fiddy says this will be of no cost to the local government.

Minister of Health, Hon Marcella Liburd says this falls in line with the direction the government is heading in terms of the development of renewable energy.

The baler will compress and wrap the waste in plastic which is not affected by the sun and will also prevent the leakage of harmful gases.

The staff of the solid waste management corporation was trained to properly operate, manage and maintain this new baler.
