Barbadian And Kittitian Winners Of Uk Chevening Awards

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 5th 2013 — The British High Commission announces the winners of this year’s prestigious UK Chevening Scholarships for future leaders. They are Shena-Ann Ince from Barbados and Jihan Williams from St Kitts and Nevis.

Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). The scholarship programme makes awards to outstanding scholars with leadership potential from around the world to study postgraduate courses at universities in the United Kingdom.

Shena-Ann is of Barbadian and Vincentian parentage, currently an Associate at a local commercial law firm as well as a part time Tutor and Lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Cavehill. She will be pursuing a Masters of Law at the University of Cambridge with particular emphasis on bankruptcy, insolvency and regulation of the financial services sector as she believes that countries in the region must develop and maintain solid legal frameworks in these areas, in order to equip themselves to meet global financial challenges. Shena- Ann intends to utilise the expertise obtained during her studies, to contribute to the development and continued modernisation of the legal framework in Barbados and the wider Caribbean. She contributes to her community as a member of Soroptimist International of Barbados.

Jihan Williams will pursue a Masters degree in Intellectual Property Law at Queen Mary, University of London. She is currently an attorney with the Government of St Kitts and Nevis in the Attorney General’s Office. She is also the Deputy Clerk of the Federal Parliament and a former adjunct lecturer with the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College. A poet, youth and women’s advocate, former State Scholar and CARICOM Youth Ambassador, Jihan has been involved with the St Kitts National Youth Parliament Association, the National Council of Women and Hope Tears, the latter an NGO she cofounded which runs a mentorship programme for teenage girls.
