Caricom Secretary-General Calls for Stronger Regional Integration
As CARICOM marks its fifty-third anniversary, Secretary-General Carla Barnett says regional integration and collective action remain essential to the Caribbean’s future.
In her CARICOM day message, Barnett said the community has made important progress in areas including regional security, disaster response, climate change adaptation, public health and education.
She said CARICOM’s success has been built on the determination of member states to work together, despite the limitations of small size and limited resources.
At the same time, the Secretary-General acknowledged that the region continues to face major challenges, including climate change, economic uncertainty and food security.
Barnett said CARICOM remains focused on strengthening trade, improving transportation and digital connectivity, creating more opportunities for young people and building a more resilient Caribbean.
