Charles E. Mills Secondary Counseling Space Has a New Face and a New Name

(EMU) – St. Kitts, May 20, 2012: A brand new look at the Charles E. Mills Secondary School’s Guidance Counseling Center is expected to change perceptions and improve relationships through increased comfort, privacy and confidentiality.

The newly upgraded center now dubbed the Gloria mills Counseling Department comprises the guidance counselor’s office and a private counseling room which besides being vibrantly painted and adorned with curtains and plants, also boasts sofa chairs and a rug, thus providing a more relaxing and conducive atmosphere for counseling.

Educator, Ms. Lorella Eddy who was responsible for the upgrade of the centre explained that it was done as part of the requirement of her Distance Learning Programme in Education Administration with the University of the West Indies. “To complete the programme I was required to select an aspect of the school’s physical plant and work toward its development as a practicum. As such, I decided to refurbish the Guidance Counseling Room,” she said.

She explained to the Education Media Unit (EMU) that the counseling room was no longer serving its purpose due to lack of privacy and appropriate space and ambiance. She therefore sought to provide a space with an enhanced environment in keeping with the high standards of the Charles E. Mills Secondary School. She expressed hope that this would encourage greater ease of communication between students, teachers, parents and guidance counselors.

The center is now named after Gloria Mills who served as the first Guidance Counselor for the then Sandy Point High School. Ms. Mills, who was present at the re-opening ceremony, was applauded for the foundation she laid and the resulting success in turning around bleak circumstances for some students.

Lorella thanked a number of contributors to the project and was especially grateful to Roysdean Richards from the Guidance Counselling Department, as well as Crispin Woodley and Ms. Eleanor Phillip who all made tremendous personal sacrifices to see the project come to fruition.
