Church robbery suspect taken into custody

Akeem Walters

ZIZ NEWSROOM, Basseterre, December 30, 2012: The police have taken a young man into custody in connection with a robbery at the St. Georges Anglican Church this morning.

22 year old Akeem Walters was taken in after the police alerted the public about the robbery.
Archdeacon Valentine Hodge told ZIZ that after the morning service he had gotten a call that the church treasurer was robbed while counting the offering.
He said at around 11 am a man entered the church and, using expletives, ordered the official to hand over the money. He said the robber then pointed a gun at the man’s head as he made his way to the table with the money. He ran off with the cash locking the door behind him.
Archdeacon Hodge said the thief made off with the combined collection from Christmas Eve, Christmas day and today…totalling over thirteen thousand dollars.
Police called on the public to help with the manhunt and just a few hours after the incident the suspect was taken into custody.
