Commissioner: Police must be accountable

ZIZ News — Commissioner of Police, Celvin Walwyn has re-emphasized the police force’s commitment to ensuring that officers obey the law as the carry out their duties.

He told recently appointed Island Constables that with their new powers comes a responsibility and they must be accountable for all of their actions.

“You will have the right to restrict a person’s freedom and we wanna ensure that you know what you’re doing when you decide to do so,” he said.

He said the force will not support them if they have violated anyone’s human rights.

“We will investigate you through our professional standards division, or as some of you know it, Internal Affairs Division, and if you are found wanting and it is a criminal offense that you have committed you will be arrested,” he said.

Walwyn said the Island Constable Course is only the beginning of the training for the new officers and more sessions are being planned for the near future.
