Douglas Calls For Fresh Elections

Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 29, 2020 (ZIZ News): Leader of the St. Kitts Nevis Labour Party, Dr. Denzil Douglas has called for fresh elections claiming that the elections on June 5 were corrupt.

Speaking to supporters outside the courthouse after the Labour Party filed six election petitions Dr Douglas said there were instance es of corruption that tainted the 2020 elections.

He said “we say to you the people, that government there, headed by Harris is illegal. It is illegitimate. And so we are asking for new elections. Fair elections to elect the members of our parliament.”

Dr. Douglas’s complaints centred mainly around claims of bribery to influence voters.

“There was bribery. Bribery in a massive way. With assets of the government, assets that belong to you the people, being used to bribe the electorate, the voters to vote for them. These are serious matters that we believe could have affected the outcome of the elections,” he said.

On Friday the St. Kitts Nevis Labour Party filed election petitions contesting the results in constituencies 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8.

Those seats were won by candidates representing the People’s Action Movement or the People’s Labour Party…two components of the Team Unity coalition.
