Dr. Kennedy Simmonds Lauded For Vision in Establishing Diplomatic Ties with Taiwan
(ZIZ News) – St. Kitts and Nevis’ first Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Dr. Sir Kennedy Simmonds has been lauded for his vision, some 32 years ago, in establishing diplomatic ties between the Federation and the Republic of China, Taiwan.
Current Prime Minister, the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris commended Simmonds, stating that the relationship, which has strengthened over the years, has been beneficial to all.
He said, “We want to commend the vision of Dr. Kennedy Simmonds, our first Prime Minister, for agreeing to formalizing that special relationship with Taiwan from which all of us have and are now benefitting…after Independence.”
Dr. Harris’ comments came on Friday when nationals joined the locally based R.O.C. representatives at their National Day celebration.
Resident Taiwanese Ambassador, His Excellency George Gow Wei Chiou, also expressed appreciation to Dr. Simmonds.
“In celebrating the 32nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between St. Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan, we would like to pay appreciation to Dr. the Right Hon. Sir Kennedy Simmonds and his then government. Without your firm and resolute decision in 1983, Taiwan cannot be the first country to establish diplomatic ties with St. Kitts and Nevis. Because (of) your wise and farsighted determination, we can stand here to celebrate the 32nd anniversary diplomatic ties with you,” Ambassador Chiou stated.
The 32nd anniversary of diplomatic ties between Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis was also celebrated on Friday evening.
