First of four Department of Sports primary school Zonal Championships starts today

Basseterre, St. Kitts (January 17, 2020)- The Department of Sports will have the first installment of the Zonal Championships today. The event signals the administrative body’s reintroduction of the meets back into the primary school calendar of events, after a discontinuation gap that lasted over ten years. Today’s Basseterre Zonal Championship is the first of four such meets spearheaded by the Department of Sports to further refine the structured development of young athletes.

Coordinator of the Zonal Championships Timothy Morton indicated that the events allow for students to compete in more familiar environments and also allow for greater support from friends and family.

Ultimately, we also see this as an opportunity for revenue to be generated to improve each school’s sports program, as gate receipts will be divided amongst participating schools,” Morton disclosed.

Director of Sports Anthony Wiltshire expressed his satisfaction with the reestablishment of the meets and also implored the corporate community to assist financially.

Your contribution will not only facilitate the development of the athletes but also enable social development,” the Director of Sport noted.

The Zonal Championships consist of four meets that showcase approximately two hundred (200) athletes per championship. The Basseterre Zone has its meet today (January 17), East Zone 1 on January 24, West Zone on February 2 and East Zone 2 on February 6.

The Department of Sports is entrusted with the all round development of the country’s youth through activities framed under its youth policy, with the aim of meeting international standards.
