Fisherfolk In St. Kitts Take Advantage Of FAO’s CC4FISH VHF Maritime Radio Handling, Safety & Sea Training

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 12, 2021 (Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries & Marine  Resources): The Department of Marine Resources hosted a VHF Maritime Radio handling and safety sea  training in collaboration with the SKN Defense Force Coast Guard as part of the FAO’s CC4Fish project at the Sandy Point Community Centre on Monday May 10 and Tuesday May 11 2021. 

The objective of the Climate Change Adaptation in the Eastern Caribbean Fisheries Sector  (CC4FISH) project is to increase resilience and reduce vulnerability to climate change impacts in the Eastern Caribbean fisheries sector, through introduction of adaptation measures such as  capacity building of fisher folk and aqua culturists and mainstreaming of climate change into  fisheries governance. 

During the training, demonstrations were shown and exercises were conducted to equip fishing  vessel operators with the knowledge and skills needed in case of an emergency while on sea. 

Mr. Cliffon Prentice was named the top participant while Mr. Elvis Maloney placed 2nd. The session wrapped up with the distribution of certificates, VHF Radios and poles to fisher folk. 

Another series of training will take place at the Department of Marine Resources this evening  from 5-8pm and is scheduled to wrap up on Thursday May 13, 2021.
