Flats demolished to way for commercial/residential development

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 8TH 2012 (CUOPM) – Weeks after the only tenant was relocated and the demolition sign went up, heavy equipment operators on Sunday pulled down the first of three aging flats (apartments) on Wellington Road in East Basseterre.

Last week, Minister of Housing, Public Works, Utilities and Energy, the Hon. Dr. Earl Asim Martin has informed the Communications Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister (CUOPM) that the buildings would not be renovated due to structural challenges and would be demolished by the National Housing Corporation (NHC) and a modern commercial/residential development constructed.

Three of the four apartments were virtually empty for years and the lone occupant was relocated months ago.

Two weeks ago the Public Notice of the demolition of the first four-apartment building was posted and on Sunday the heavy equipment operators pulled down the first of several similar structures.
