Football action returns to Sandy Point after ten-year hiatus

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (September 9, 2013) — After a ten-year absence of organised football action in Sandy Point, the Sandy Point Football Association organised a Soccerama on Sunday September 8, which saw Ghetto Roots FC emerging the winner, and the Norgen Wilson Soho United FC taking the second spot.

Five teams are in the Sandy Point Football Association’s league which has been sponsored by National Caribbean Insurance Limited. The Soccerama, whose each game was played for 30 minutes, is the warm up to the actual football league which starts this weekend, September 14/15.

In the first game of the event, Sandy Point Ballers FC played to a 2-all tie with the Norgen Wilson Soho United FC. Sandy Point Ballers drew the first blood when Tijahni Fahie scored in the 7th minute and Valdon Rogers added their second goal in the 13th minute. Soho United’s Dilyn Liddie found the back of the net in the 19th minute and was again on target in the 28th minute.

After regulation time of 30 minutes with both the teams tied 2-2, Norgen Wilson Soho United sailed to the semi final following a penalty shoot-out, where they found the back of the net four times against their opponents one time.

The second game saw Ghetto Stars FC thrash Unique Touch FC three goals to nil. Scorers were Lonzo Wilkinson in the 5th minute, Shakia Challenger in the 9th minute and Ivas Burnham in the 14th minute. By virtue of the clear win, Ghetto Stars advanced to the finals.

The third games saw the Norgen Wilson Soho United FC edge out Crab Hill United FC, one goal to nil for them to advance to the finals. Scorer for Norgen Wilson Soho United was Jaquille Richardson who found the back of the net in the 11th minute.

In the finals, Ghetto Stars FC edged out the Norgen Wilson Soho United by one goal, which was scored by Pado Burnham in the 16th minute.

The league has been sponsored by National Caribbean Insurance Limited, whose Sales Manager Mr Floyd Charles presented the sponsorship cheque of $6,000 to the President of the Sandy Point Football Association Mr Kirth ‘Dale’ Charles.

Also present at the opening ceremony was the area parliamentary representative the Hon Shawn Richards, and the 2nd Vice President of the St. Kitts Nevis Football Association Mr Don Grant who presented four balls to the Sandy Point Football Association.
