Government offers Consumer Relief Package for Christmas

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 06, 2012 (SKNIS): Residents have been given tidings of great joy by the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis with the announcement of a tax relief package for the month of December, 2012.

Minister of Information Honourable Nigel Carty informed the St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service that effective December 07 through to December 31 no duties and taxes will be charged on foodstuff arriving from abroad, up to 400 lbs, while travelers will also be given duty free allowance up to EC$540.00 which is the equivalent of US$200.00 based on the Cost, Insurance and Freight (CIF) value. He noted that the measure was a fitting gesture at this time of the year.

“The Government is pleased once again to extend this financial relief package to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis,” Minister Carty stated. “We appreciate that Christmas is a time of spreading good cheer and this initiative provides such to those receiving foodstuff packages as well as those travelling abroad in order to shop. Additionally, after consultation with the local business sector, Cabinet will announce No VAT Day, which according to all reports, was quite successful and beneficial to all involved last year.”

Minister Carty assured that as in the past, 2013 will see Government continuing to consider initiatives to further stimulate the economy of St. Kitts and Nevis.
