Grass Roots Program taking root

The Grass roots program organized by the West Indies Cricket Board is taking root on Nevis.

President of the Pennyless Al stars Cricket club, Kelvin Archibald indicated on Wednesday that he feels it’s a good program.

‘I can speak for the Charlestown/St.Paul’s cluster.  The children are learning the basics of the game, under the tutelage of Coaches Carl Tuckett and Gerard TRINI Charles and others who would assist occasionally. You can see the improvement as they develop from week to week,’ he said

The children show up at the ET Willet Park on Saturdays and would undergo rigorous training exercises which will cover general fitness exercises and coaching in the basic skills of the game such as batting; bowling; and fielding.

The children range in age from about six years up to about 15 and are obviously enthused with their progress.

Occasionally, the coaches would arrange mini matches for them so that can compete under friendly conditions and test their skills.

Other programs are ongoing across the island with Wendell MICEY Wallace coordinating an impressive group at the VOJN Playing field and Derrick Parry along with Livingstone JABADAR Lawrence are working with another group of enthusiastic youngsters at the Cotton ground Playing field.

According to Archibald, the future of Nevis cricket looks bright.
