Grenada Ratifies OECS Economic Union

PM Tillman Thomas

ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, THURSDAY, JANUARY 20, 2011 – Prime Minister Tillman Thomas has affixed his signature to the instruments that allow Grenada’s full participation in the Economic Union of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

At a short signing ceremony this afternoon at the Grenada Trade Center in Grand Anse, the Prime Minister noted that the economies of the OECS are “inextricably linked.”

“The future of our economies depends on our ability to work together and successfully exploit the opportunities that come with the establishment of the economic union,” the Prime Minister said, noting that his Cabinet had already ratified the document at a special sitting on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Thomas and his OECS colleagues initialed the new Treaty of Basseterre last December, during a ceremony in St. Kitts.

The signing of the document caps a series of public consultations detailing the importance of the revised treaty to the further development of the integration process and its benefits to Grenada.
