Harris: SIDF Revamp A Priority
(ZIZ News) — Prime Minister, the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris says the government is continuing efforts to restructure the Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation [SIDF] as part of its commitment to transparency.
Dr. Harris told the media that government has been consulting with Attorneys on the way forward, before any decision is made.
“The SIDF as it has functioned in the past, was a structure with which Team UNITY has had a problem and we still do. And that is why you have found that we have not been doing quite a lot in relation to it. Because we have sought professional advice on how to move that particular entity into a position of greater accountability in keeping with the expectation of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis,” he said.
He said the government is being thorough in the initiative and the legal professionals have requested more time to determine how to proceed.
“I want to just make the point that at times when it may appear that we are moving slow on some of these matters, it is because we have to move carefully with respect to them and we have taken a deliberate strategy of being thorough and being thoughtful and to get the requisite advice on a number of matters,” he said.
Dr. Harris said government expects to announce plans for the SIDF on or before the next budget presentation.
