Health And Food Safety Workshop

ZIZ News…18th June, 2013 –Food Safety was in the spotlight yesterday as Agriculture and Health Officials from across the region met at The Marriott Resort for an Agricultural Health and Food Safety Workshop.

And as we hear in this report, the goal is to stay in line with international standards.

Agriculture and Health Officials, as well as representatives from The Bureau Of Standards are meeting this week to look at how safe is the food produced in the Region.

The goal of this workshop is to strengthen the Agricultural Health and Food Safety System to effectively operate within the region.

Emphasizing the importance of the workshop, Agricultural Economist at the OECS Secretariat George Alcee, said health and food safety must be a top priority.

Minister Of Agriculture, The Hon Nigel Carty said this workshop will help participating countries stay in line with international standards for trade.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry Of Health, Andrew Skerritt says the Ministry understands importance of food security and that’s why they’ve partnered with other ministries in a farm to fork project that brings healthy foods to the schools.

This is one of a series of national workshops to be held in St.Kitts Nevis and also aims to boost competitiveness and encourage the private sector to get more involved in Agriculture Health and Food Safety Systems.
