Highest standard of school meals programme to be maintained

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 2ND 2011 (CUOPM) – The Ministry of Education said Monday it will continue to ensure that the school meals programme is maintained at the very highest standard.

Minister of Education and Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty said he visited schools to witness first-hand the quality of meals provided was that which was expected by the Ministry and the Government.

“The menu varies from day to day to ensure nutritional balance and interest to the appetite. Students attested to how much they enjoyed the lunches. It was clear however that students do have their favourites among the assorted menu, as to be expected,” said Minister Carty.

Pointing to the recent attention brought to the schools meals programme as a result of adverse comments made about it.

The Minister in his update to the Cabinet delivered an update on the programme and gave a reminder that it was only in 2007 that the School Meals programme had undergone a comprehensive overhaul of its menu and its management system.

Recently, in 2010, the Ministry of Health assisted further by recommending an assortment of menus for the feeding programme.
