ZIZ Sports…April 30, 2012 — An impressive opening ceremony signaled the start of the first ever Ricky ‘Eye Spy’ Liburd Football Festival. The series of games were played at the Gingerland Recreation ground aka ‘Ball Pasture’ and were played in memory of former Stones United player, Ricky ‘Eye Spy’ Liburd who died tragically in a road accident last year.

The event was the brain child of Stone United manager, George BRIGO Meade who noted at the opening ceremony that the idea was conceived around the grave site of the fallen Footballer.

The invocation was done by his aunt, Mrs. Marion Lescott and the national anthem was beautifully rendered on pan by his sister Rozel Liburd and Sherry Chapman. The proceedings were chaired by Brian Dowe of the Nevis Football Association who also delivered welcoming remarks.

Also delivering brief remarks was Mr. Anthony Johnson, President of the St.Kitts-Nevis Football Association. He spoke to the improved relationship between the SKNFA and the Nevis Football Association and pointed to training of officials such as Malcolm Ramsey and —Greene among others as examples. He also noted that the recent hosting of division one fixtures at the ET Willet Park was only the beginning of things to come. He later presented four brand new footballs to Mr. Meade as a goodwill gesture.

Minister of Sports on Nevis, Hon Hensley Daniel was also warm in his congratulations for Mr. Meade’s innovative idea and the support of the home team, Stones United.

He challenged them to ensure that it would be the first of many such tournaments and promised his administration’s assistance going forward, in making the continued success of the tournament a reality.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Mrs. Marion Lescott who thanked everyone for making Meade’s idea a reality. She noted that funds generated from the sale of food and drink provided at the ground, would go towards the future development of Ricky Liburd’s daughter, RICKELLA.
