Nassau, Bahamas (CMC) — Bahamian officials say they have intercepted a small speed boat with three “irregular” Haitian migrants on Sunday, bringing to eight the number of illegal migrants apprehended over the weekend.
The authorities said in another incident, the US Coast Guard intercepted a 24 foot vessel in Bahamian waters with Jamaicans and Haitians.
The authorities said a 34-year-old Bahamian national, who was also on the vessel, was arrested.
They said the immigrants detained on Friday included Jamaicans and Haitians, three of whom were adult males and one female and a child.
On Sunday, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and the Royal Bahamas Police Force intercepted the small speed boat with three Haitian migrants on board off Hole In The Wall, South Abaco.
The statement said that the police are investigating both incidents.
Bahamian authorities have implemented new tough measures aimed at preventing illegal migration into the country with human rights groups condemning the new measures as inhumane.
