Hot Rod Having Pork for Dinner

St Kitts – Nov. 11, 2010 – Rain could not stop the over 300 hundred patrons who turned out at Beaumont Park on Sunday November 7 for the opening of the calypso season for Sugar Mas’ 2010/2011. The energy was electric as Legends opened the first innings with Mighty J, Singing Angie, Mighty Jules, Singing Jennifer, Lord Payne, De Chemist, Mr Magoo, and By Surprise.

Former Junior Calypsonian I-Don-I with his commentary on “Are we really poor” received the first of many encores for the evening. Big Edwards tried to elude potholes with his witty piece “Pot Hole Dodging” (PHD). “Foot Soldiers” by Lord Kut caused the usual stir with his energetic performance. Then it got dark and it was time for dinner. Hot Rod served up different styles of pork and the crowd loved every moment of it. His “Pork for Dinner” was requested several times.

After the presentation of the of the stimulus check to Tent leaders Wingrove Hicks and Socrates, it was time for the Proud Sounds tent to hit the stage. Legendary MC Calypso Reggie who is vying for the monarchy this year paid tribute to Minister with responsibility for Carnival Hon. Marcella Liburd with his “Three Cheers”. Pahoola, Honesty, and junior calypsonian Mighty Leo (son of De Provoker) took control of the mid innings before De Provoker broke ground for his electrifying construction of “Plant Post in Dey”.

Rockafella Saving the Party

Rockafella decked in red graduation hat and gown appeared serious but imparted wit and humor in his rendition of “Save De Party”. LaLa was simply fantastic in showing how to wake up a crowd when he explained how “Puppy Tun Darg”. This performance got the patrons off their feet with excitement and he was called back several times.

Former Calypso king Pung-Wa made an instant impact with his social commentary “Hang Him High”. This song was well received as it chronicles the ills of our youth in society today.

King Konris brought the house down with the Anguilla version of “Sleeping Tiger”. Konris is returning from one year of calypso sabbatical and a record back to back winning performance in the Leeward Islands Calypso Competition in Anguilla. There were also guest appearances from National Carnival Chairman Clement Monarch Ogarro and Dr Principle out of Antigua.

Both Grandmasters and Legends band acquitted themselves with a professional sound and MC’s Calypso Reggie and Sandra B kept the crowd entertained throughout the evening’s performance.

Proud Sounds have scheduled their next appearance at Rum Barrel in Port Zante for Thursday November 11. Legends will appear at Bobsy’s on Saturday November13 and Sprat Net on Sunday November 14.
