Keeping Music Fest Alive

Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 25, 2020 (ZIZ): Thursday June 25 would have been the start of the 2020 St. Kitts Music Festival but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it and other similar events worldwide have been postponed or cancelled.

The Ministry of Tourism however is keeping the spirit of music festival alive through smaller initiatives.

Executive Director of the Tourism Events Unit, Allister Williams said even though coronavirus has postponed the festival the ministry is taking steps to keep the energy for the music festival high in preparation for when the country reopens its borders.

“Even though we are living in an age of the coronavirus, at the same time we will rebound, we will reopen and the festival will continue,” he said. “And so we want to make sure that we keep the vibes alive. We want to keep in in the heart of our many patrons locally and internationally. We want them to know that our hearts are with them. We hope that they are staying safe and they are coping with the new normal as we prepare to see them next year.”

He said one initiative is using the Music Festival Facebook page to keep the discussion going through the posting of photographs, posters and other pieces of media.

“We want to make sure that we relive some of the memories, the happy times we’ve had,” he said. “Whether it’s at Fort Thomas Hotel, Warner Park Cricket Stadium, or the Kim Collins Athletic Stadium. We want people to relive some of those memories and at the same time get ready for the 2021 edition. As you know this year we had a mega line-up planned and had it not been for the virus I believe we would have had one of the best productions ever”

The Ministry will also be partnering with ZIZ to highlight moments from previous stagings of the Music Festival.

“As of Thursday evening, there should be a feature on ZIZ,” he said. “We are hoping to see the feature tonight (Thursday), as well as Friday and Saturday night spanning the three nights that the festival would have been, had it not been cancelled for the coronavirus. I’m not certain what may be happening in terms of our partners, if they’re doing anything special to highlight some of the happy times that we’ve shared over the years, but certainly ZIZ will be carrying a feature every night for the next three days.”

The St. Kitts Music Festival has been postponed until June 23-27, 2021.
