King Ellie Matt in Good Spirits despite Illness

(ZIZ)– Musician extraordinaire Elson St. Clair Nero, known to all as “King Ellie Matt”, is in high spirits despite his ongoing illness.

In an interview with ZIZ Radio Personality Jazzy-D, Ellie Matt, who won numerous carnival calypso crowns and Road March titles, said although he is far away carnival is always dear to him.

“I have dialysis three days a week and it takes a toll on my body so I’m not always up to it. I am starting rehab again and learning to walk all over again. I’ve been hustling to see if I could come home for carnival; as you know carnival is always on my mind,” he said.

When asked about his thoughts on the current state of music in St. Kitts, the former calypso king said musicians need to start playing more music of quality.

He noted, “The music today that we have in St. Kitts is good. It has good traits in it and some of it, we just have to learn now to go beyond that carnival zone and get into quality music.”

King Ellie Matt led his band “Ellie Matt and the G.I’s Brass” to several road march titles and has provided back-up music for the Mighty Sparrow, Shadow, Arrow, Swallow, David Rudder and many other big names on the music scene in the Caribbean.
