Leeward Islands Debating Competition gets underway

(ZIZ News) – The 2015 Leeward Islands Debating Competition got underway Thursday when students of the British Virgin Islands competed against St. Maarten.

The students debated the moot “The CARICOM Region’s Failure to Legalize Marijuana is a Colossal Mistake”.

The St. Kitts Debating Team’s elimination debate will be against Nevis Friday night.

Member of the St. Kitts Debate Team, Samuel Hancock was a guest on ZIZ Radio this week where he spoke of their preparations and readiness for the competition.

He said, “It takes a lot of practice. We’ve been practicing since November actually. We practice our moots, we practice our scripts, and we discuss the topics that are going to be debated. We have to prepare our own scripts and they are run through with each teacher.”

Hancock revealed that there is pressure on the local debaters as they compete on home soil.

“St. Kitts had the streak of 12 years running and last year Montserrat won so we are trying to bring back the title. And we’re just honoured to represent St. Kitts in this competition and we thank you for your support.”

ZIZ will offer live coverage of the nightly debates via the internet and radio.

The 2015 Leeward Island Debating Competition is being held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort.
