Leeward Islands Masters Tournament Bowls off with Impressive Ceremony
Sports Page — The 2014 edition of the Leeward Islands Masters’ Cricket tournament bowled off at the NEPAC building in Charlestown Nevis, on the evening of Thursday 5th June.
The impressive ceremony was chaired by veteran Sports journalist and commentator, Stevenson Manners. He noted that the tournament this year was being held in honour of the late Carlylse Hobson who passed away under tragic circumstances in February of this year but who had made significant contributions to Nevis and Leeward Islands Masters’ Cricket over the years.
His opening remarks were preceded by the national anthem which was wonderfully rendered by Mr. Mario Phillip and prayer by Mr. Sydney Newton.
Mr. Ulrick ‘PANCO’ Morton rendered a beautifully crafted original poem in honour of the late Carlylse Hobson which was very well received.
Minister of Sports on Nevis and Deputy Premier, Hon. Mark Brantley then addressed the gathering and welcomed the visiting teams warmly to Nevis and asked them to sample some of the many activities during what will be a busy weekend on the island. Activities outside of the cricket tournament will include Drag Racing and the Win Fes’ Festival in St.James’ Parish. He also pointed to the rich history of cricket in Nevis and saluted Elquemedo Willet and the other Nevisians who have already graced the international stage.
President of the Nevis Masters’ Cricket Association, Franklyn KUT Daniel also welcomed the visiting teams and took time out to highlight the schedule of matches for the weekend.
One of the highlights of the evening was a special recognition of the family of the late Carlysle Hobson which included his wife Cecely and children. A special presentation of a plaque was made to his daughter Karen in honour of the contributions of the late Masters’ cricketer.
Brief remarks were delivered by representatives of two of the major sponsors. Mr. Lauren Barry represented chief sponsor, NAGICO and Ms Hyacinth Pemberton local Branch Manager of the St.Kitts-Nevis Development Bank, represented her institution.
The gathering was then highly entertained by the young masquerades of Nevis and by the charismatic multi crowned calypso King of Nevis, King Meeko and his young prodigy, DELI RANKS.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Malcom Ramsey.
The cricketers and invited guests then retired to the courtyard for finger foods and live entertainment by Rohan Claxton and his versatile band.
The attention now turns to the action on the field of play today Friday with Nevis taking on Anguilla at Cotton Ground at 9.30 am and St.Kitts taking on St.Croix at the ET Willet Park.
