Local cricket league enters crucial week

Keith Scarborough

President of the Nevis Cricket Association, Keith Scarborough, on Monday updated the media as regards the ongoing leagues being hosted by his Association.

He noted that this week is a critical week for the second division competition which is currently interestingly poised. Two teams in GSS and Masters have been left out of the competition because of their constant ‘no show’ for scheduled matches. The points have been awarded to the opposing teams which showed up for the matches.

The semi finalists will be determined this week as the top teams in the competition will face off for a spot in the big four.

One of the deciding matches this week will see Calypso coming up against SDA Jets on Tuesday 23rd April at 4 pm at the ET Willet Park. Calypso has a score to settle as they were beaten by the Jets team last year.

SDA Jets also has another crucial encounter on Thursday 25th April when they come up against the Pennyless All Stars team, also at the ET Willet Park.

According to Scarborough, the semi finals will be played on Thursday 2nd May and the grand finals will be played on Tuesday 7th May.

In terms of the one day competition for the 1st division teams, this has been badly affected by rain and a decision has been made to award the competing teams with one point each for rained out matches.

It therefore means that the two top teams are Highlights and Pennyless All stars and the grand finals in that competition will be played on Sunday 28th April at the ET Willet Park.

The two day competition has been postponed as time is running out to formalize a team for the upcoming LICA competition which commences on May 31st.

Scarborough indicated that the local selection panel will select a 26 member team by Sunday 28th April and they will immediately commence intense training and trial matches so that a final squad can be organized. The selectors are Sylvester Browne (chairman); Patrick Newton; Brian Dyer and Carl Tuckett.

He urged business places and interested individuals to continue to make their contributions towards the development of cricket on the island and is confident that the Nevis team will give a good account of itself in this year’s LICA competition.
