Minister of Health on Nevis says we all have a role to play in suicide prevention

Junior Minister of Health and Gender Affairs, in the Nevis Island Administration, Hon. Hazel Brandy-Williams says we all have a role to play in the prevention of suicide.
Minister Brandy-Williams was at the time delivering remarks to mark World Mental Health Day on Thursday.
She said statistics show that more than 600 persons are registered with mental illness on Nevis.
She said, “In Nevis, data from the Mental Health Unit indicates that there are 643 persons on register with various mental health illnesses. Between the years 2001 and 2013, there were 10 deaths by suicide. Although the figures may be small in comparison to other countries, each death has profound long-lasting impacts on families, friends and communities.”
The Minister said that there is hope however noting that suicide can be prevented if we assisted those in need whether through health services, education and training, and social support at all levels.
She then used the opportunity to appeal to interested persons to pursue a career path in the field of psychology.
The Health Minister added, “I would like to make an appeal to all our citizens who have an interest in the field of psychology, counselling, social work, nursing or medicine to consider pursuing specialized careers in mental health. This will help us to bolster our human resource capacity and to further develop our mental health services.”
World Mental Health Day was observed on Thursday 10th of October 2019 under the theme, ““Together we can prevent suicides.”
