On Wednesday, Minister of Education and Constituency #2 representative, Hon. Jonel Powell visited the St. Kitts Nevis Association of Persons with Disabilities at the McKnight Community Centre in observance of International Day of Sign Languages.

The UN General Assembly  proclaimed 23 September as the International Day of Sign Languages in order to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf.

On its Facebook page, the St. Kitts Nevis Association of Persons with Disabilities thanked Minister Powell for visiting and helping to heighten awareness of what it is like for persons in the deaf community.

The association held exercises to help others understand how to better interact with persons with disabilities. Patrons were also given the opportunity to view video tutorials that teach viewers how to use and understand sign language.

Minister Powell was also accompanied by the Hon. Lindsay Grant.

International Day of Sign Languages is observed annually on September 23.
