Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 23, 2019 (ZIZ News): In commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of the U.N Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Ministry of Community Development, Gender Affairs and Social Services hosted the 30th Anniversary Children’s Summit at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium on Tuesday evening.

In a brief interview with ZIZ, Senior Probation Officer in the Department of  Probation and Child Protection Services, Gerald Connor explained why St. Kitts was selected to host the 30th Anniversary celebrations.

He said, “For the 30th Anniversary, St. Kitts was actually selected because we were the first to sign on and ratify The Convention On The Rights Of The Child in the OECS and we were the second within CARICOM with exception to Belize. We signed on, we ratified it on the 24th of July 1990.”

Connor said the summit will allow children to participate in several sessions that will give them the opportunity to share their views on topics such as Child Protection, Health, Education, Art and Technology.

At least 300 persons were also expected to attend the Opening ceremony in Warner Park which was held ahead of Wednesday’s Summit.

The U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child Summit was scheduled for July 24 2019 at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort.
