NAGICO sponsored Windsor University Health Drive

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (18th February, 2012) – The Students for Health group of the Windsor University held a very successful health drive on Saturday 11th and 18th February at the Valu Mart parking lot in Basseterre.

According to a spokesperson of the Group, the exercise is part of the University’s community outreach programme where it involves the students in community development activities. The health drive focuses on checking patient’s glucose, blood sugar, height, weight and others. If necessary, the patient is then referred to JNF General Hospital for further tests.

The health drive has been ongoing for the past four years and many persons partake of the free service that the students offer.

NAGICO Insurances Co. Ltd has lent its support to the Students for Health group through sponsorship.

NAGICO’s Sales and Marketing Officer, Mr. Steve Saunders expressed his company’s delight in partnering with Windsor University.

The Student for Health (S.F.H) programme is an umbrella organization under the student governing body in association with Dean, Dr. Brijinder Gupta and Administrator, Mr. Ramesh Mulkanoor at the Windsor University School of Medicine. The organization is supervised by Dr.Vishal Surender, faculty Windosr University.

Since its inception, the administration and students at Windsor have been working assiduously to make this programme pragmatic and interesting for both students and the populace of St.Kitts.

The S.F.H programme is entirely voluntary where medical students are trained in medical ethics and the procedure of comprehensive and detailed history and physical taking examination of a patient.

The programme is multifaceted in nature as students have the opportunity to establish rapport with patients and in so doing developed a therapeutic skill with regard to patient/clinician interaction or relationship. It also gives the students an opportunity to put into clinical practice, the theoretical medical knowledge acquired in the classroom.

One, if not the most important, aspect of the S.F.H’s tenet is to give back something to the society of St.Kitts. The SFH program achieves this through screening patients for high blood pressure, diabetes and advising them on a healthier lifestyles and how these common disorders can be controlled and prevented.
