National Bin Distribution Programme Underway

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 17, 2020 (ZIZ News): The Solid Waste Management Corporation’s(SWMC) National Bin Distribution Programme went underway on Monday beginning with Stapleton Extension in St. Peters.

Stapleton Extension in St. Peters was the first stop for the SWMC’s National Bin Distribution Programme where some 12, 000 standardized bins will be distributed to households across St. Kitts.

Minister with responsibility for the SWMC, Hon. Eugene Hamilton was there to issue the first bin to resident of Stapleton Extension Paulette Ottley, who expressed joy and gratitude after receiving the first bin.

The 65-gallon “smart” bins are outfitted with barcodes and serial numbers that will enable the SWMC to track the movement of the bins in the event of a theft.

Project Manager at the Rehrig Pacific Company in California, Walter Kostetskeyy explained the process of linking the bin to the residence using the barcode and serial numbers.

The bins are also labelled to help residents identify items that are to be disposed of that are permitted and prohibited.

Program Manager at Pro Source Ltd, Reginald Clarke stated that the bins are only for waste from inside the residence.

Minister Hamilton said that the bin distribution process will continue over the next couple of months by then all residents across St. Kitts should have a bin noting that if there is a shortage more will be purchased.

He said that this initiative is “part of the overall scheme of improving communities in which we live”.
