NEMA urges the public to remain alert for disasters

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 2, 2019 (ZIZ News): Officials from the National Emergency Management Agency are urging the general public to remain alert for hurricanes and tropical storms as we are in the peak season.

In an interview with ZIZ news, National Disaster Coordinator of NEMA, Abdias Samuel said that the country has to continue to be prepared and he also remind persons of the different ways in which they can prepare.

He mentioned that persons are to stock up on non-perishable items and also to set aside physical money as financial institutions can also be affected by these disasters.

Samuel stated that there are a number of drain cleaning exercises being carried out in flood prone areas such as the Newtown area, he said it is important for persons to cooperate and partner with NEMA in ensuring that the water ways are clear.

He also mentioned a number of partnerships with different businesses across the island that will help to get the country get back into a state of normalcy in the event of a disaster.

Samuels also advise the public to be mindful of misleading and inaccurate information, he stressed that any information that is to be shared with the general public is to come through an official government channel such as The Office of the Prime Minister.
