Nurse Averil Walters wins trip for two from Cape Air through Nevis Min. of Health

NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (MAY 13, 2013) — Nurse Averil Walters of the Alexandra Hospital, was the lucky nurse to win the grand prize of a trip for two on Cape Air to any of its destinations. Her name was drawn from almost 90 nurses and support staff by Minister of Health Hon. Mark Brantley, at the Alexandra Hospital’s Conference Room on May 13, 2013.

Minister Brantley congratulated a visibly surprised Nurse Walters and she expressed her gratitude to all who made the prize possible.

“I would just like to say thank you very much to Cape Air through the Ministry of Health for having this gesture. Thank you,” she said.

Meantime, Manager of TDC Airlines Services Nevis Ltd. the Agents of Cape Air Mrs. Sharlene Herbert said the Airline was pleased to be a part of the Nurses Week 2013 initiative,

“On behalf of Cape Air, we are happy to be a part of his initiative and just last week Cape Air was actually here because they are undertaking an emergency plan that they are putting in place and they were actually here at the Hospital trying to seek the assistance and I am sure that the nurses were a part of this emergency plan.

“So we are really happy to be a part of your initiative of Nurses Week and we congratulate Ms. Averil Walters,” she said.

Mrs. Herbert also informed Nurse Walters of the many options she had with her prize.

“Actually Cape Air flies direct here from Nevis to San Juan but she can actually chose to go to Tortola, St. Croix, St. Thomas, Anguilla, Viecas, that’s an island off San Juan or Mayaguez.

“So you actually have choices that you can make and even though the aircraft is a small plane, I have been on it many times and I can assure you it is very comfortable. The ride is enjoyable so once again on behalf of Cape Air we congratulate you and we say thanks,” she said.

Nurses Week 2013 was celebrated on Nevis from May 6th to 12th. Throughout the week nurses nursing assistants, attendants, community health workers and emergency technical technicians were all honoured with token gift vouchers in a show of appreciation by the Ministry of Health through its partners in the private sector.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Mrs. Nicole Slack-Liburd, said the Ministry was excited to have partnered with the various business places in the community and thanked them for their support for the island’s nurses and supporting staff.

“We were excited at the Ministry of Health to partner with various business houses in the community. As some of you would have seen, myself and some others coming around last week giving you the opportunity to pick out a prize from a box, as a token of our appreciation…

“We take the opportunity to thank our sponsors that have been part of this process last week including LIME, Digicel, TDC and Horsfords. Our final partner but very significant partner is Cape Air. Many of you would have heard we have two prizes for you at the Ministry of Health, as part of Nurses Week 2013, which was a small prize last week but today we are going to be drawing a trip for two on Cape Air and so everyone has an opportunity to be a part of this process as a significant token of appreciation,” she said.

The last event of the Week was a candle light service at the Charlestown Wesleyan Holiness Church.
