Our Country, Our People, Our Future

Basseterre, St. Kitts, (SKNIS) — The Charles A. Halbert Public Library for the past 27 years has been involved in teaching children how to care for the environment through its annual summer camp and this year is no different.

The theme given to this year’s camp, Our Country, Our People, Our Future, shows the commitment of the library to educate the future generation about the environment and recognise its importance says Assistant Librarian Carmen Browne.

“We have decided to focus the theme for this year on keeping our environment clean,” she stated. “The theme was selected as to sensitize the children, to make them aware of the environment and the consequences resulting from their actions.”

Some of the future environmentalists were excited to share how they liked the camp so far and what they were learning at the camp.

“This is my first time at this camp and it’s very nice,” said Nyla Maynard.

Ydanya Phillip said, “We are learning how to keep our environment clean.”

“When I go back to school I will never litter,” revealed Ashton Liburd.

“I learned to keep the environment clean and when I go back to school I will tell my friends to keep the environment clean,” boasted Tajunella Maclean.

There are currently 175 children participating in the camp from ages 5-12 years old. Children will take part in discussions, field trips, arts and crafts, singing, dancing and drama all centred around the theme.
