Phase I of Island Main Road rehabilitation to commence soon

Charlestown, Nevis, May 22, 2019 (NIA): In its ongoing thrust to better the road infrastructure on Nevis, the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) plans to commence rehabilitation work shortly on the Island Main Road, from Cotton Ground junction leading to the Vance W. Amory International Airport.

Hon. Spencer Brand, Minister of Communication and Works in the Nevis Island Administration, made the disclosure at a sitting of the Nevis Island Assembly on May 21, 2019, adding that the first phase of the project will be from Cotton Ground to Cliff Dwellers.

“At the Budget Debate I indicated that we were looking very seriously at having the road from Cotton Ground to the airport rehabilitated. We have looked at it and we invited three contractors to provide some quotations…

“We have looked at all of the numbers and with the advice and the consultation and the recommendation we have decided to move with Surrey Paving. We are hoping that this project can get on stream very shortly once everything is in place,” he said.

Mr. Brand said the administration’s decision to do the project in phases was prompted by the costs submitted by the three contractors which were more than the funds available for the entire project at that time.

The contractors who provided bids for the project were DIPCON Engineering Services Ltd. based in St. Vincent; Kelly Construction from St. Kitts; and Surrey Paving & Aggregate Co. Caribbean Ltd., a Jamaican based company with a local office in St. Kitts.
