PM Douglas supports Minister Phillip’s suggestion in making laptop distribution annually to first formers of high schools

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 27TH 2012 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas is supporting his Minister of Technology, Hon. Glen Phillips’ suggestion that laptops computers be given to all students entering high school in the twin-island federation.

Accepting 2,900 laptop computers from the Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), His Excellency Miguel Tsao, on what is phase 3 of the one-to-one laptop computer programme, Prime Minister Douglas noted that the dream of providing a laptop computer to each high school student became a reality with the financial assistance of the friendly Asian nation.

Phases one and two of the programme saw students in the fourth and fifth forms and some in the third forms receiving laptops. In phase 3, the rest students from form three, along with first and second formers would get, ensuring that all high school students are provided with the technological equipment.

Expressing thanks and appreciation to Ambassador Tsao, Prime Minister Douglas said the generosity of the Taiwan Government has assisted his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government in investing in the human capital of St. Kitts and Nevis

“And it is not just the human capital of today, it is the human capital of the future that you have also invested in,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

Referring to Minister Phillip’s of pursue the dream of making the provision to laptops to incoming first formers, annually, Prime Minister Douglas noted: “If we were to make a very quick mathematical calculation and we know how many students enter our first forms in high school every year, that’s only the number of computers from here on that we would need to really furnish to our young people.”

“I do not know where the Minister will get the money, from but I support his dream and that is why I said ambassador that today’s ceremony marks the end of one initiative, one program of our dream, but in fact opens the door for the second phase of this dream that we’ve had,” said the St.Kitts and Nevis leader.
