PM Harris congratulates ROC Taiwan President Her Excellency Dr. Tsai Ing-wen on re-election

Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 11, 2020 (ZIZ News): St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris, has extended congratulations to the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Her Excellency Dr. Tsai Ing-wen, who was re-elected on Saturday in Taiwan’s elections, securing more than 57 percent of the vote.

In a congratulatory letter, the Prime Minister said, “On behalf of the Government and people of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, it gives me great pleasure to extend heartfelt felicitations to you, Vice President-elect Lai Ching-Te and the Democratic Progressive Party on your decisive victory at the polls.”

Prime Minister Harris also said, “The outcome of the election is not only testament to the strength of Taiwan’s young but thriving democracy, but it is also a clear confirmation that the people of Taiwan are confident in your leadership and strong mandate for safeguarding the country’s future at this critical point in its history.”

The long-standing relationship between the Governments of Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis has been at its best in recent times under the leadership of Prime Minister Harris.

In July 2019, President Tsai became the third President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to visit St. Kitts and Nevis and the first one to visit the island of Nevis.

She made history as the first female President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) when she was sworn in as the 14th President on May 20th, 2016.
