Poetry And Spoken Word Competition On POPs

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 8, 2021 (ZIZ) — Local marketing firm SEN Consulting and the St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards in collaboration with the Basel Convention Regional Center in Trinidad is embarking on an awareness programme to sensitize the general public on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

In an interview with ZIZ News, Science and Research Manager at the St. Kitts & Nevis Bureau of Standards, Marcus Natta explained that these pollutants remain in the environment for a long time and they have harmful effects on animals and human beings.

The awareness campaign began with a series of radio show appearances on ZIZ radio and other participating radio stations.

In an effort to get the participation of primary and secondary school students across the Federation the POPs Poetry and Spoken Word Competition was organized.

Managing Director for SEN Consulting, Noah Mills explained how the competition came about.

He said for the poetry portion of the competition saw participation from 8 primary schools from both St. Kitts and Nevis and 4 high schools.

Mills added that the students who successfully passed the poetry section of the competition will then have to perform their written piece in the spoken word phase.

The POPs spoken word competition will be held on Saturday, December 11th at the Ojay’s Complex at 1 pm
