KITTS, JUNE 6TH 2013 — A UWI Cave Hill team led by Dr. Sandra Robinson, Caribbean Poetry Project Coordinator, facilitators Prof. Mark McWatt, Dr. Phillip Nanton, Mr. Samuel Soyer and Research Assistant Ms. Gina Burnham visited St. Kitts from 26th April to 1st May, 2013. As a result of the team’s travel to St. Kitts, the community was able to benefit from their input.

The University of the West Indies Open Campus St. Kitts & Nevis in collaboration with Island Xpressions Media and Marketing owner, Samal Duggins, hosted an event entitled ‘An Evening of Caribbean Expressions’ on Sunday 28th April, 2013. The venue for this event was Mapau, Port Zante. The event featured poets from St. Kitts and Nevis such as Jihan Williams, Loughlin Tatem and James Z. Galloway as well as Prof. Mark McWatt, Dr. Phillip Nanton and Samuel Soyer. Royd Phipps added another dimension to the event providing accompaniment to Kimi-Lee Knight and displaying his drumming skills and selecting audience members at random to beat his drum.

An event of this type is a regular feature, normally arranged by the host country to the Caribbean Poetry Project team and features the involvement of team members as well as local participants. Prof. McWatt, Dr. Nanton and Samuel Soyer delighted the crowd with their works that were provocative and entertaining. This event was of a very high standard and the team members were impressed by the infectious level of enthusiasm shown by participants as well as members of the audience.
