Police Division ‘B’ awards members for outstanding service

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 18, 2013 (SKNIS): Several members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force assigned in St. Christopher Division ‘B’ were recognised for outstanding service at an award ceremony at the Nirvana Restaurant in Boyds Village on Saturday (February 16).

Senior law enforcement officials including Commissioner of Police Celvin G. Walwyn and members of the High Command were joined by justice and legal representatives such as Magistrate Judge Josephine Mallalieu-Webbe, and the Director of Public Prosecutions Rhonda Nisbett-Browne in paying tribute to Constables Dwight Davis, Andrea Battice, Mitchelle Bergan, Vivian Caesar and Marsha Walters.

Incoming Commander of St. Christopher Division ‘B’ (Acting) Superintendent Terrence James congratulated the awardees and highlighted an important ingredient that he has observed since being named head of the Division in late January.

“In taking command, I have already seen the camaraderie and teamwork within and amongst the supervisors and the junior ranks of Division ‘B’,” Supt. James said. “This I must commend because in the Division teamwork is the only way that it can function properly.

“… I would like to leave these words in the mind of my officers in Division ‘B’. Don’t follow me because I may not lead you. Don’t walk in front [of] me [because] I may not follow you. Walk beside me and we will work together as a team in Division ‘B’.”

Division ‘B’ features police stations in Old Road, Sandy Point, St. Pauls, Dieppe Bay and Tabernacle. It’s the largest Division in the Federation and according to Commissioner of Police of Police Celvin G. Walwyn the Tabernacle and Dieppe Bay stations have been among the most improved in the law enforcement agency. Commissioner Walwyn stressed that these efforts and others across the twin-island nation have had a positive impact.

“You should be proud of yourself, very proud of yourself,” he revealed. “Jamaica just celebrated having a seven percent drop in crime last year. You in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis are celebrating a 53 percent drop in crime. “… Your family members, your c

hildren can now go about in their communities feeling better than they used to because your hard work is paying off and for that I thank you.”

Outgoing Commander of St. Christopher Division ‘B’ Superintendent Andre Mitchell explained that the award ceremony, now in its third year, has boosted the morale of the men and women assigned to the different areas. He congratulated the Strategic Planning Group chaired by Sergeant John Bergan for successfully organizing this year’s event.

As the Most Outstanding Constable of the Year in Division ‘B’,Dwight Davis used his time at the microphone to inspire his colleagues.

“I would like to take this opportunity to encourage other police officers to work hard, or continue working hard despite the challenges we are faced with,” Davis stated. “Our efforts will not go in vain as we strive and endeavour to make this organization more effective and this Federation a better place for residents and visitors alike.”

Several other officers were recognized for a number of achievements including most case files in court as well successfully passing police exams. The award ceremony was held under the theme “Collaborating with the Community in Problem Solving.”
