Policing with You- the Role of Coast Guards

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 20, 2020 (ZIZ News): Inspector James Francis was joined by Coast Guard representatives on Thursday’s episode of “Policing with You” where the discussion surrounded the role that the St. Kitts and Nevis Coast Guard plays in the Federation.

Commanding Officer of the St. Kitts and Nevis Coast Guard, Major Walter Bass first explained the structure of the coast guard.

The Coast Guard is structured where we have a commanding officer, an executive officer, engineering officers, operations and training departments and a logistics department as well. There is also a youth function where we engage in assisting the cadets.”

He said that the primary role of the Coast Guard is the maritime protection of the Federation’s water space including partnerships with other regional stakeholders to ensure maritime security.

Major Bass said the duties of the Coast Guard include search and rescues and searches on vessels to curtail drugs from entering the Federation.

Operations and Training Officer for the St. Kitts and Nevis Coast Guard, Lt. Lenn Daniel said that there are many opportunities within the coast guarding field and he encouraged the young people of the Federation to consider joining the coast guard.
