ZIZ News…Sept 8, 2011 – The theme of the national Consultation on the economy, “The architecture of an Efficient and Sustainable Public Sector in Support of our Economic Growth Agenda” came into sharp focus when St. Kitts Nevis prime Minister addressed a wide cross section of stakeholders.

In his address to officially open the national consultation, Prime Minister Douglas spoke passionately about the realities of the economy and the need to build an efficient public and private sector.

Dr. Douglas who is also the Finance Minster impressed upon the stakeholders the need to spur growth and improve the livelihood of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

He spoke of a number of successes including the introduction of the Valued Added Tax which he said was a bold decision as the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis weather the worst economic downturn ever experienced in the twin island Federation.

Prime Minister Douglas also touched on the ongoing efforts at debt reduction and the benefits of the standby arrangements with the International Monetary Fund as they seek to stabilize the economy.

Presentations at the opening were also made by a member of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Mr. Scott Caines who brought the perspective of the Private Sector and Mr. Michael Head of the Hotel and Tourism Association who spoke on behalf of tourism stakeholders.

Representation also came from the Nevis Island Administration led by the Premier the Hon. Joseph Parry.
