Prime Minister Of St. Kitts And Nevis Assumes Chairmanship Of The Monetary Council Of The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB)

Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 24th, 2020 (ZIZ News): Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Hon. Timothy Harris assumed Chairmanship of the Monetary Council of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) in an official handing over ceremony on the morning of Friday 24 July at the ECCB Conference room, St. Kitts.

Prime Minister Harris succeeds the outgoing Chairman, Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell, Council Member for Grenada.

In his congratulatory remarks via video conference call, Dr Mitchell wished Dr. Hon. Timothy Harris every success during his tenure.

While accepting the baton Dr. Harris thanked the Monetary Council and committed to working closely with his fellow Monetary members and said together in unity the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union can achieve regional excellence.

Dr. Harris also committed to working closely with the Governor, the Board of Directors, management and staff of the ECCB as well as the citizens and residents of the ECCU.

He said “amidst these unprecedented challenges and remodeling our economies for resilience and shared prosperity, let us proceed with a strong and renewed sense of regional solidarity”.

St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister addressed the present pandemic and expressed how COVOD-19 has uncovered many inefficiencies and presented many opportunities. He assured that the Monetary Council will redouble its efforts to support the digital transformation of our region over the next twelve months.

The Monetary Council is the highest decision making authority of the ECCB and comprises the eight Ministers for Finance of the ECCB member governments.

Chairmanship of the Council is rotated alphabetically each year among the eight ECCB member countries; Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, The Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The official ceremony to mark the change in Chairmanship was streamed on the ECCB’s Facebook page and all ZIZ’s social media platforms.
