Public Sector Information Security Prioritized

Basseterre, St. Kitts (SKNIS): A two-day workshop designed by The Department of Information Technology to strengthen and preserve the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information within the public sector concluded today (June 20).

ICT Policy Advisor, Pierre Bowrin said that the workshop is intended to help ensure the public sector is equipped to protect valuable information and for the federation to meet the highest international standard of information security.

“It is imperative that we pay more attention to the way we manage our data,” Mr. Bowrin emphasized. Information is now the most critical resource of any company or organization and we need to give it the priority it deserves.”

Organisation of American States (OAS) Representative to St. Kitts and Nevis Starret Greene, said that there is growing cynicism toward developing states and a perception of vulnerability where technology is concerned. These states must therefore take part in the global dialogue to improve the standard of information technologies.

“Because of recent revelations about the extensive nature of internet surveillance the debate about adopting stronger international electronic safeguards is gaining momentum. I therefore urge that small countries become part of this important dialogue in order to protect their multiple interests.”

The Department of Information Technology has partnered with the OECS Electronic Government for Regional Integration Project (EGRIP) and the Organization of American States (OAS) to deliver the workshop.
